A
nurse from the VA visiting and examining
me
would ask, on a scale of 1 to 10 how is
your
pain today?
In
the morning when I wake it’s a 3 or 4;
at
bedtime after having hobbled about
all
day, probably a 7 or 8.
Right
now in the middle of the day, I’d say,
somewhere
around 4 or 5.
But
the nurse from the VA is not here today.
And
if she was I would tell her, when I tried
to
put on my socks in the morning, I had a
really
difficult time bending over.
And
the shooting pain ranged between 15
and
20, but your numerical range doesn’t
allow
me to go that high.
And
suffice it to say, the pain was so bad,
today
that I gave up and decided to go
barefooted.
Fortunately
for me, the weather has
warmed
up enough where socks are
not
necessary to keep my feet warm.
In
any case, pain is a miserable way
to
start one’s day.
So,
here I sit today, pushed back slightly
in
my recliner, positioned and immobilized,
situated
just so where my pain is right at 0.
Now,
I’m not motivated to move or budge
an
inch, me old and gray, painless for the
moment,
mind you, looking down and
staring
at my bare feet all day.
