Saturday
was my day,
weekend,
no school.
I
liked to play Army
outside
in the yard
all
by myself.
I
wore the over sized
helmet
given to me
by
the neighbor lady,
Mrs.
Liberty.
She
told it was
her
son’s from
the
War in Korea.
But
first
there
was the TV,
black
and white
in
the mid 1950s,
Learn
to Draw
with
John Gnagy.
Pencil
in hand,
the
blank back of
an
envelope
from
mail a few
days
before.
Ready,
begin.
And
John led me
line
after line
until
the fence
and
old barn
were
drawn
with
a tree in
the
foreground.
Everything
in
those early years
was
in black
and
white
except
that
steel
pot helmet
given
to me
by
the neighbor
lady,
Mrs. Liberty.
I
can see it
to
this day,
66-years
later—
olive
drab.
I
majored in art
back
when I
was
seven years old,
being
a soldier
was
my minor.
First
things
first.
