All in a Day's Work

Even though it pains me physically at age 73

to stand or sit for any length of time, I still cook

my dinner.

Some days I’ll have something already pre-made

like rotisserie chicken from the grocery store.

A couple of microwave minutes and it’s done.

For the meals I make long-hand, I’ll prepare it

in late morning or early afternoon when I still

have the energy and my pain level isn’t so acute.

Today it's a pasta dish with Italian Sausage,

mushrooms, sliced carrots, peas, garlic, onions

and marinara sauce.

I alternate standing and sitting as I boil the

noodles, fry the sausage, slice and mix the

concoction.

The process takes about an hour and I am hurting

considerably when done. The dish is now simmering

on the stove, thank God.

I make enough to have several meals, two

alternate days and two more meals for the

freezer to eat at a later date.

Planning, that’s what it takes for me to prepare

my meals these days. Chicken one day, pasta

the next, meatloaf on Thursday sounds good.

Today's pasta has simmered long enough. Smells

good. I turn off the stove and let it cool. I take a

taste. Hmmm, needs a little salt.

That’s enough activity for today. Smoke a cigarette,

take the dog out, find my recliner and tune in a little

Beethoven. Dinner as usual at 6 PM, 4-hours away.
