Giving Thanks

5 AM, darker than a cave in here,
until I turn on the light. Thank you,
Thomas Edison and General Electric.
Quiet too, a deafening silence until

I rustle around, fumbling for the
coffee pot, running the water, mak-
ing my morning sounds. Thank you,
Joe DiMaggio and Mr. Coffee. I’d

thank the guy who came up with
house shoes and recliners too,
but I doubt that even an all-wise
Google has answers for those. TV,

though, I turn on the set to check
out the weather and catch up with
the news. Thank you, Philo Taylor
Farnsworth who is credited as being

a television pioneer. In a way, I can
relate to the pioneer concept. As
with all the rest who came before
to explore, thank you posthumously,

Mom and Dad, responsible for the
creation of me, an adventurous spe-
lunker, plumbing uncharted worlds.
Otherwise, I’d be another run of the

mill, ordinary guy fumbling about in
early morning, having once again made
it to the light through the unknown
cavernous depths of yet another night.
