I
look back in time, a thing most every
older
person with half a brain does,
especially
when one recounts a long
history.
Funny, though, at the time
I
never really considered where I
might
be some 30-years from then.
I
had resigned myself to getting to
and
being where life determined I
should
be. Carefree, let the chips fall
where
they may, I used to say.
Back
then, had I considered being
wealthy,
today I may have been basking
on
the sunny deck of a yacht sailing into
Montego
Bay, or living in a luxurious el
palacio
in Barcelona, Spain.
Never
gave a thought to such things,
or
driving a Ferrari or Bugatti either.
Today,
at age 73 I am paying for not
planning
ahead. Instead, I’m tucked
away
disabled in my studio apartment
in
Kansas City, no car, no fancy boat,
unable
to get about, with my small dog,
living
modestly on Social Security, and
waiting
impatiently for maintenance to
come
and repair my central air which
shot
craps yesterday in the 90-degree
heat.
Another
barn burner forecast today.
Had
I envisioned this situation of mine
today
some 30-years ago, I may have a
kept
driving West on Interstate 40 when
I
reached Albuquerque, New Mexico.
But
how was I to know? I was driving a
rickety
old Ford Pinto at the time.
