What to Make of It

Yesterday, I wrote a piece about standing
in line, and it got me nowhere. And the day
before that, I said something or other about
the day before that.

Got me nowhere again. I didn’t get here to
where I am strictly on the merits of my deeds.
Were that the case, I wouldn’t have made it
this far. And occasionally that thought crosses
my mind.

Today, I tell myself, today, the first day and the
last. I awake with a blind eye, and all these im-
ages come to mind. Sometimes there seems to
be no rhyme to reason for me.

And then to cap it all off, from out of the blue,
these vivid figures appear clearly as can be—
Snakes in the grass and sassafras tea! How in
hell does one respond to that?

Some will claim, sheer insanity. I for one happen
to be okay with that. And, as for tomorrow, we’ll
just have to wait and see, won’t we?
