I learned about bad guys from the Lone Ranger and
John
Wayne.
I
learned about friendship from Charlie Brown and
Captain
Kangaroo.
It
was Bugs Bunny and Beetle Bailey who taught
me
how to laugh.
I
learned a few tricks and received some delightful
treats
going door-to-door in my neighborhood on
Halloween.
I
was taught what injustice looks like from To Kill
a
Mockingbird, what equality means from Martin
Luther
King Jr.
I
learned to cry when a bully kid punched me in
the
eye, when my Grandpa from Chicago died.
I
learned what it felt like to be mocked then cru-
cified
from Jesus Christ.
I
was taught how to read and write by Mark Twain
and
Ernest Hemingway.
I
learned about humility from Gandhi and Mandela,
found
out about lies, dishonesty and
cruelty
from
Hitler
Mussolini, Stalin and
Donald
J,
learned
about bravery from Francis of Assisi,
Sgt.
York, Audie Murphy and Rosa Parks,
learned
about vision from Helen Keller,
compassion
from Mother Teresa,
learned
how to bat from Stan the Man, how to
catch
from Curt Flood and Willie Mays.
I
was taught how to box and stand up for what I
believed
from Mohamed Ali,
learned
comedy from Larry, Curly and Moe, satire
from
Bruce and Carlin, poetry from Bly and Angelou.
It
took my mother, my father, the parish
priest,
a teacher, a friend and a guy who never liked
or
believed in me to tell me, no, not now, not ever..
Although
it was not always easy, I learned about love
quite
naturally.
It
took me damn near a lifetime of learning and
inspiration
to press on and try again.
