What Matters?

What matters to you, she asked him? And he
being a lot like me answered: Here matters,
here and now where you and I stand matters.
And what else other than that matters, she

continued? Why you, of course, you matter
to me, said he having pondering the matter
thoughtfully. She smiled and went on with
her interrogatory. More, tell me more?

What other than here and now and I matter?
Why, he replied, there are so many things, a
plethora of stuff, if you will, too many things
to enumerate. Let me ask of you, why does it

matter what matters to me? I’m bemused.
I asked you first, she insisted once again.
Okay, all right, already, he sighed. For the last
time: High on the list of matters which matter

to me is pork chops, mashed potatoes and gravy.
Bingo! She said grinning from cheek to cheek.
That’s what we’re having for dinner. Let’s eat!
And so we did, and by golly, it really did matter.

I mean to that other guy who just happened to
be a lot like me.
