I
was seven-years old. Grandpa from Chicago
had
come to visit with my brothers and me. At
the
time, Walt Disney’s Davy Crockett was all
the
rage on TV. And when I got to be older, I
wanted
to be just like Davy, coon-skin cap
and
all. On a trip to the store, my brothers and I
asked
grandpa if he would buy us one of those
neat
Davy Crockett hats with the cool furry
tail
coming out the back. I remember him looking
at
us sternly shaking his head negatively. Grandpa
was
from the old country, Greece, you see, and a
believer
in natural materials like cotton, wool and
straw.
Those hats not good for you, boys, very bad
for
the hair on your head, he said. Vinyl can’t breathe,
make
you go bald! And my heroic dreams were
crushed
knowing that I would never grow up to be
like
Davy. Just look at him, I pleaded with grandpa.
He’s
on TV, and vinyl doesn’t seems to bother his
hair
in the least.
