Each Day, the Game in Play

On any given day, I am reminded of
death in hundreds of ways: Bones
at my feet from the fledgling bird

who had fallen too soon from the nest;
the raccoon flattened in the middle of
the road who only made it halfway (He

never suspected it would end like this,
his last day turning out to be the best
and worse beyond raccoon imagining);

those lost in the tornadic storm who
just happened to be way that fateful
day. Life is a perpetual game of

dodge-ball we play. Take one hit and
that’s it, you’re out of the game. I, for
one, prefer the hardball analogy where

a glancing blow from the wild pitch
thrown allows you to take first base.
It isn’t over yet. Another chance…

Just you wait.
