At the Symphony

The theater seats, I’m guessing, 3-thousand
or more, all spectators like me are there to
hear the symphony. The house lights dim

as the stage lights rise. The orchestra is tuned
and ready. A customary round of applause as
the maestro, distinguished with his white hair,

black tuxedo and bow tie, enters stage left. He
smiles genially, shakes the concertmaster’s hand,
and makes his way to center stage. Atop the ros-

trum, he bows to the audience and turns smartly
to face the orchestra with his baton held high.
Prokofiev is featured on the program tonight.

With excitement and delight, each of those in
attendance will absorb each movement, every
note personally. My eye is trained on the per-

cussionist who has a wide array of instruments
and devices aligned in front of him and to either
side. His fervor is intense and his every beat,

impeccable.
