Lessons in Literacy

From Dick and Jane in the first grade all
the way to Moby Dick in the eighth.
How many stories read does it take
to travel so far, even if the journey leads

you into the past? I saw Dick and Jane run,
felt Ahab’s thirst for revenge. It took a few
years for me to get there. All those words
along the way. And I learned that Spot the

dog made a great and comforting companion.
And for the vengeful heart, a harpoon, though
reasonably effective in experienced hands, can
be a terrible thing. It took me a little longer to

understand all the implications of Hester’s
Scarlet Letter. At the time, I had some growing
up to do. And today, I am pleased to inform you
that I got there eventually.
