A
sudden crash and booming...there
was
a storm raging outside, though
without
windows at the office, no one
could
actually see.
Alarmed
at first, the young woman
at
the desk behind me wondered
out
loud if there was perhaps lightning
going
on out there too?
Her
query gave me pause to chuckle a
bit.
At a very early age my father taught
me
some things about the weather: Light-
ning
causes thunder when it splits the
atmosphere
in two.
And
when the air rushes back together
to
fill the void, that sudden collision then
creates
a thunderous boom. Ergo, without
lightning
there would be no thunder.
I
could see that the young woman behind
me
had a lot to learn about physics and
meteorology.
Since then, I have come to
realize
that in my life, I too had a lot yet
to
learn as well.
And
the lightning / thunder phenomenon,
as
I live and breathe (and for all the trivial
good
it has done me), will remain indelibly
stored
in my brain. I’m retired now, and all
I
have left to say is, so what?
And
besides, meteorology never was my
game
anyway.
