Before
the Super Bowl Game the other day,
before
a crowd of some 70-thousand and
many
millions more watching on TV,
four
military veterans each over one hundred
years
old who had served meritoriously during
World
War II were being honored.
Only
one of them was able to stand, and that
was
with the assistance of an aid. The others
sat
propped up and motionless in their chairs.
Given
their history and longevity, all were
admirable
men to be sure. Now, more than
likely
I will never be a centenarian. But were
I
one of them, if asked, and speaking with
a
modest measure of sensibility, I would
have
to say, I don’t know what in hell I did or
didn’t
do exactly to get me here. And God’s
honest
truth be told, with all my faculties about
me,
living to the ripe old age of eighty-five
would
have been perfectly satisfactory with me.
By
the way, who are all these folks and where
did
you say we are again?
