Something about Creativity (for Fred)

An inventor, the scientist or engineer flips
the switch and the light refuses to shine;
the chemistry in the petri dish fails to yield
a cure; the bridge collapses under its own
weight. Mistakes have been made somewhere
along the way. One must either give up trying
or keep at it until a solution has been found.

VanGogh enhanced Starry Night because he
painted spiraling stars instead of pinpoint
sources of light. Pollack trusted in his belief
that the splattering of paint would criss-cross
the canvas and randomly land esthetically
where it was meant to be.

The whole idea, the premise of their work was
not to copy or replicate the typical and mundane,
but to create in form and fashion, a variation, a
new perspective of perceived reality. As the child
is free in her vivid coloring of lavendar grass and
orange skies, so you are not restricted in the artful
renderings of your imaginings.

And when your painting is done, when the final
stroke has been applied, step back with an astonished
eye to realize that which was hidden deep within in
you has come to fruition through inspired creativity.

Ah creativity, miraculous creativity, science and
technology aside, it is the wellspring of feeling
and individuality come to light so that others may
see. And, my friend, without doubt and analytical
scrutiny, simply sigh a deep sigh of gratitude, and
be amazed! Indeed, there are no mistakes to be
made in such a wondrous activity.
