So, Here We Are

How in the world did this come to be,
so many years have elapsed, I sitting
here across from you, you sitting there
opposite me, as fate or luck would
have it, both of us brought to this old
age reality? You have your stories to
tell, and, Lord knows, I have mine. We
have each inherited, and deservedly
so, every wrinkle and line. I suppose
we can easily dispose of talk about
our hopes and dreams for the future.
At this point in time considering my
options for dinner is about all the risk
I’m willing to take. I’d invite you to
join me, but in the interest of time,
I mostly just throw something in the
microwave these days. Some claim
that technological invention is a time
saver. Ever notice, when you set the
timer and press start, it always counts
the seconds down? I haven’t been
able to figure out how to add on any
time. Stupid of me, but I threw the
operating manual out the day I got
the damn thing. I know, I know, now
you must be wondering, with those smarts,
how in the world did he manage to come
this far? Just dumb luck is about all I have

left to say.
