Checks and Balances, an Accounting Each Day

There were losses yesterday,
so many more than we’ll ever know.
One loses track after a time, and

we no longer bother keeping count.
Still here when we wake, one more
day on the right side of life’s ledger,

one day fewer on the left. From
time to time I’ve tried to balance
my accounts, but aging becomes

the weightier of entries, and I’ve found
that my skill with numbers is lacking
when it comes to checks and balances.

I read a bit each day, and try to write
something of meaning which I hope
will resonate, something translucent

or of substance with which some-
one as mathematically challenged
as I can relate, more or less.
