Over There, Over Here

 

Here we sit smugly secure in our part of the world.

War, war, terrible war over there.

Here we sit unaware, inactive in our own diminishing democracy,

Gunshots, anarchy, deception and greed and degradation all around.

Here we sit with our petty distractions hoping for the best—

Not me and my family, never us, always the other guy.

Here we sit as voters are restricted, as women’s rights are threatened,

As the innocent are murdered in their homes and on the streets.

Here we sit claiming our Constitutional Rights while violating those of others.

Be careful what you wish for.
