What’s
in a Name?
They
name their greeting cards, Hallmark
and
Ambassador. They name their cars, Ford
and
Chevrolet. They have even given each
day
of the week names, Sunday through
Saturday.
When they say, Basketball, or
Fruit
Loops, most folks know what they
mean.
Mister Clean and McDonald’s conjure
up
certain images as does the Empire State.
Where
indeed would we be without Coca Cola
and
Nike? Thirsty in our stocking feet, I say,
walking
instead of driving down the street
not
having wished Happy birthday or Merry
Christmas,
playing games no one has played
before,
eating tasteless whatever for breakfast,
confusing
the order taker at the drive-thru,
cleaning
the place with mere water and a rag
in
a state which was never admitted to the Union,
a
barren place which borders no other, no bird,
no
flower, no flag or motto, no capitol for kids
to
memorize in school. Had they not given a
name
to Sacramento, tell me, where in the world
would
California be? And folks would constantly
be
asking, which day of the week is this? And
likely
you'd stand there shrugging your shoulders...
And besides, who in hell are "they" anyway?
